European settlers called the ranges in central Australia the MacDonnell Ranges. West of Alice Springs they were called the West MacDonnell Ranges. But this is an ancient land. For at least 30,000 years they have been called Tjoritja (Choricha). For me that is the real name, evocative of antiquity and spiritual significance. It encapsulates the vastness and rugged beauty of this land.
